We have travelled to Gaza 7 times beginning just after Cast Lead as part of the 2nd convoy into Gaza after Cast Lead which delivered 25 ambulances and much needed aid to Hospitals. With each successive visit we were seeing more and more destruction and devastation. Again we were in Gaza when the bombing stopped from Pillar of Defence. We stood on the remains of the Dealou Family home where so many died. Indeed that morning another body had been dug out from 45 feet below us. After the most recent attack which israel calls “protective edge” it is hard for us to imagine how people will cope after this genocide. We, at Light Gaza, cannot magically make things better for all our friends in Gaza, but, we will deliver our lights and that will cut down on the needless death from fire. When children or their parents are forced to use lit candles as a means for reading, studying or simply to sooth children who are afraid of the dark this dangerous situation has caused many deaths as we learned in March of 2012. We witnessed firsthand how candles can kill when we attended the funeral of three tiny children after their bedroom caught on fire from a candle. As we stood on the charred remains of their bedroom we promised their family we would work to stop this from happening to other families by providing lights to other poor families in need.
Gaza is suffering, they have no electrcity, they dont even have walls or windows anymore, but we can supply them with safe lighting if you help us! Israel’s recent offensive left thousands of homes in ruins and others partially damaged people have no electricity, further aggravating the suffering of thousands of Gazans.
“Most homes have no windows now because of the Israeli attacks,” Samah al-Masri, Gaza resident and a mother of six children. She said “she would have to use pieces of plastic and cloth to seal up the windows.”
